Safety

  • Be aware of other people around you. Don't bump into them and be respectful of usage space around the equipment.
  • Only drill vertically. This is not a mill / CNC machine. Things could go very wrong if the work piece is moved while drilling into it.
  • Tie long hair back (preferably tucking it into clothing). Be aware of beards if appropriate.
  • Don't wear loose clothing that might catch on any moving part.

Drill bits

  • These are located on the wall behind the drill and in the draw below labelled “Drill bits”.
  • If a drill bit is broken during normal usage, replace with a spare drill bit from the “Spare bits” storage box. Do not use the spares if there are still suitable bits available.
  • If there are no more spares, make a note of the drill bit size and comment on the mailing list to get more stock. Alternatively, buy a new drill bit and request reimbursement through the normal forms.
  • The drill bits are good for general purpose.

Usage

  1. Move the working platform up or down by loosening the handle attached to the left of the platform.
  2. Insert the relevant drill bit. Ensure the shank of the drill bit goes all the way into the chuck.
  3. twist tighten the chuck, no key is required.
  4. Align the hole in the platform with the drill bit. This is so that the surface won't be damaged if you do drill through the work piece.
  5. Secure the work piece onto the platform with clamps or using the metal vice clamp to hold the piece so your hands don't have to.
  6. Turn on machine with the start button on the side of the machine.
  7. Slowly use the three handles on the side to lower the drill into the work piece.
  8. Rotate the handles slowly to remove the drill bit upwards from the work piece - do not just let go of the handles.

Tidying up

  • Wait for a while to ensure that the drill bit is cool. If you can hold onto the bit for a long time (i.e. at least 3 seconds) with your bare hands, that is cold enough.
  • Remove drill bit from chuck. and put all drill bits back into their respective places.
  • Brush the drill and platform to remove excess material. Sweep area around drill press and bin the rubbish.
