Code of conduct
Bristol Open Technology Lab C.I.C. (encompassing Bristol Hackspace) strives to provide an inclusive space, forum, and community. Everyone should feel welcome regardless of their age, ethnicity, race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, or socio-economic background.
We will not tolerate any behaviour that we deem to be harassment, bullying, or discrimination. If a member tells you that you are behaving inappropriately then you must stop.
If you experience or see another member behaving inappropriately then challenge the behaviour if you can. If you can't or don't feel comfortable doing so then report it to the Directors.
Membership
Becoming a member
You must be over 18 and not have an outstanding ban to become a member.
When you become a member you will be issued a keycard/fob. Do not give this to any other member or person.
Ending your membership
To end your membership you need to:
- Inform the committee (this can be done through the website)
- Cancel your standing order if applicable
You do not have to return your keyfob/card as we can disable it remotely.
Termination of membership
The directors can terminate your membership if they decide your continued participation is harmful, or likely to be harmful, to Hackspace. This may be made as a result of:
- An investigation into formal complaints made against you.
- You failing to respond to multiple requests to settle a significant debt to Hackspace.
- Your membership payments having stopped.
A resolution to terminate a membership must have the support of a strict majority of the directors to pass. Termination takes immediate effect, unless by the grace of the directors.
The directors will give at least 14 days notice of a meeting where sanctions such as terminating your membership is up for discussion. This is to allow you reasonable opportunity to make representations in advance. In exceptional circumstances the directors may ask that you do not use Hackspace until the decision has been made.
Members' rights and liability
By becoming a member of Bristol Hackspace you become a voting member of Bristol Open Technology Lab C.I.C., the incorporated entity that controls Hackspace. This gives you the legal right to vote at general meetings and other rights in accordance with our policies, for example putting forward or supporting purchase proposals.
As Bristol Open Technology Lab C.I.C. is a company limited by guarantee without share capital all members, and persons who have ceased to be a member within one year, carry a financial liability in the unlikely event the company is wound up due to insolvency. The amount of this liability is a maximum of £1 (one GBP) per member, if demanded by the administrator of Bristol Open Technology Lab C.I.C.
Safe working
Before using any tool or equipment in the Hackspace you must:
- Asses whether you are capable of using it safely
- Asses the condition of the tool or equipment every time you use it. It may not be in the same state/condition to when you last used it
- Ensure any guards or other safety features are in place.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Consider the impact to other members, for example dust, noise etc. Inform them of your plans so they can remain safe, for example by putting on their own PPE.
Some equipment requires an induction either in-person or online. Do not attempt to use induction protected equipment without completing the required inductions first.
