manual:workshops

There are some specific rules related to use of the specific workshop areas of the Hackspace:

  • Never store anything the workshop areas. This includes your project, materials, waste, or donations. Ad-hoc storage is simply not appropriate in this environment, because of the potentially hazardous nature of the machinery.
  • If you're doing woodwork, you must do it in the Woodshop, This is to prevent rest of the space getting covered in sawdust.
  • Our bins don't accept wood, MDF, plywood, etc, so you need to take all your waste wood away with you. The only exception to this rule is bagged sawdust.
  • If you are using a machines which is connected to the permanent extraction, or using a hand-held sander, you must use the dust collector too.
  • If the dust collector is full, bag up the waste and put it into the building's skip.
  • Sweep up and bin any remaining sawdust, and put tools away in their correct places.
  • If you're doing metal work, you must do it in the Metalshop. This is to prevent the rest of the space getting covered in oil, swarf, and sparks.
  • Our bins don't accept large pieces of metal so you need to take this kind of waste waste away with you. There are some material specific swarf bins by the lathe.
  • If you are using machines which may produce sparks ensure the area is clear of any flammable materials before use.
