Using the wrong parts can cause tensions issues, missed stitches and broken needles. * Do not use bent needles. * Do not pull or push the fabric while stitching, if can cause the needle to break. * Wear safety glasses as the needle can break and cause eye damage. * Switch the sewing machine off when making adjustments in the needle area, such as threading the needle, changing the needle, threading the bobbin, or changing the presser foot. * Always unplug the machine when removing covers, lubricating or when making other user servicing adjustments mentioned below. * Never drop or insert anything into any opening. * The sound pressure level under normal operating conditions is 75dB. ==== PPE ==== Please wear safety glasses, to protect eyes in case of needle breakage. ---- ===== Introduction ===== ==== Manual ==== The manual can be found here: {{ :equipment:craft:passport-2.0-instruction-manual.pdf |}}. ==== Induction ==== Due to damage to the previous machines there is now an induction before you can use these new sewing machines to ensure that the machines are used and maintained correctly. The induction will be avilable on the membership portal PC in the laser cutting room. Once you have passed the induction you will be able to use your keycard/fob to get access to the sewing machine cases in the Art Design and Textiles room upstairs in the Hackspace. Please only use these in the ADT room or the main desk area and not in other areas of the space that are dusty, oily, where spray products or aerosols are being used or in the hot works area. ==== Storage ==== The Pfaff sewing machine are to be stored in their boxes in the ADT room. They must be packed away as shown below and placed inside the box ready for the next user. {{ :equipment:craft:20251118_135458.jpg?nolink&400 |}} ===== Maintenance ===== Please keep the air openings and ventilation of the machine unblocked amd reguarly clean out the machine and foot controller from the accummulation of lint, dust and loose cloth. ==== Servicing and parts ==== This is a double insulated product and so all replacement part should also be identicial and be marked with the words "DOUBLE INSULATION" or "DOUBLE INSULATED". ===== Sewing ===== === Switching on === {{:equipment:craft:pfaffpowerswtich.jpg?nolink&100 |}} * Power switch if on the right hand side of the sewing machine, along with the power cord connection. * Connect the foot control cord to the front of the socket at the bottom left (round hole). * Connect the power cord to the rear socket and plug cord into the wall. * Press on/off switch to turn on power and light. There are a number of utility stitches from standard stitiches, hemming, overlocking, darning, and button hole stithces. There are also some addition quilt, needle art, stain and decorative stitches. Please check the manual as some require the IDT system to be engaged, specific types of thread, needle or tension to work correctly/well. There is also a handle panel on the yellow Pfaff tab on the right hand side of the machine that you can pull out. ---- === Free arm === {{:equipment:craft:pfaff-freearm.jpg?nolink&200 |}} * For use with sleeves and narrow projects. * Slide off the accessory tray * Clear work area * Arm is ready to use ---- === Thread cutter === {{ :equipment:craft:pfaff-threadcutter.png?nolink&200 |}} (Image taken from manual, page 11). To use the thread cutter, pull thread from back to front as in image below: ---- === Spool pins === {{ :equipment:craft:pfaff_horizontal_spool.png?nolink&200 |}} The machine has two spool pins, a main spool pin and an auxiliary spool pin. These are designed for many types of thread. The main spool pin is adjustable and can be used in both horizontal position ( the thread reels off the spool) and a vertical position ( the thread spool rotates. The horizontal position can be used for most sewing and embroidery thread and the vertical position can be used for many speciality thread. == Horizontal Position == Place a spool cap and the thead spool pn the spool pin. Make sure that the thread reels over the top and slide the second spool cap. The spool cap should be slightly larger than the thread spool, there are two sizes please use the most appropriate. The flat side of the cap should be pressed firmly against the spool with no gap. == Vertical Position == {{ :equipment:craft:pfaff_vertical_spool.png?nolink&200 |}} Turn the spool pin to the vertical position. Slide on the large spool cap and place a felt pad under the spool to prevent the thread reeling off too fast. DO NOT place a spool cap on top of the spool pin as that would prevent the spool from rotating. == Auxiliary Spool pin == The auxiliary spool pin is used when winding a bobbin thread from a second spool of thread or for a second spool when sewing with a twin needle. Use the same as the vertical spool position. We also have a separte spool holder for the large spools available in Hackspace. This primarily works by the thread reeling off the spool, but there is little tension correction prior to the machine so there amy be issues with tension is using this. {{ :equipment:craft:largespool_holder.jpg?nolink&200 |}} ---- === Threading the machine === For single needle theading please follow the images below or refer to the manual for more information. For dual needle trheading please refer to the manual. {{ :equipment:craft:pfaff-threading1.png?nolink&400 |}} {{ :equipment:craft:pfaff-threading2.png?nolink&400 |}} {{ :equipment:craft:pfaff-threading3.png?nolink&400 |}} ---- === Bobbins === These machines can do bobbin winding and use a horizontal bobbin holder beneath the sewing needle for more information on how to wind and insert the bobbin please refer to the manual. ---- === IDT (TM) - Integrated Dual Feed === This is a system for sewing fabrics precisely and is a trade marked solution from Pfaff. For some stitches and fabrics ( light silk or rayon) it is important to feed the top fabric and bottom fabric at the same time. This also helps with keeping patterns together and quilting. You can engage and disengage the IDT system depending on your need. It only works whether presser feet with the center back cut out (see page 15 in the manual for more information.) To engage the IDT system raise the presser foot and press the IDT system down until it engages. To disengage the IDT system raise the presser foot. Hold the IDT system with two fingers at the ribbed ankle. Pull the IDT system down, then pull it away from you to release the IDT system slowly upward. {{ :equipment:craft:pfaff-idt.png?nolink&400 |}} ---- === Pressure foot pressure === You should not need to change the presser foot pressure from the standard value "N". When using specialty techniques or when sewing very light or heavy fabrics you can adjust the pressure to improve the result. For light fabric turn the dial counterclockwise. The dial may come off if turned too far, but just replace the dial and turn it clockwise until it stays in place. For heavy fabric turn the dial clockwise. If it you can't turn it of it comes to a stop you have reached maximum pressure, do not turn any further. ---- === Thread Tension === There is a dial on top of the machine to change thread tenion. You may need to adjust the thread tension for different fabrics, batting, stitches and threads, for the best results. Typically threads should meet evenly between the two layers of fabric. If bobbin thread is visible on the top side, the needle tension is too tight and needs to be reduced. If the top thread is visible on the underside of the fabric, the needle tension is too loose. Increase needle thread tension. For decorative stitches and buttonholes, the top thread should be visible on the underside of the fabric. It's best to do a few tests of the stitches you want to use on the fabric you are going to sew to check tension. {{ :equipment:craft:pfaff_thread_tension.png?nolink&400 |}} ---- === Needles === Use only quality needles to minimise needles breakages. Pfaff recommends using 130/705H needles with these machines. You can be Universal needles, stretch needles, embroidery needles, denim needles and wing needles with this mahcine. * Please change the needles often every 6-8 hours of use. * Always use a straight needle * A damaged needle can cause skipped stitches, breakgae or snapping of thread and damage the stitch plate. Do not use asymmetrical twin needles as it may damage your sewing machine. ==== Accessories and parts ==== Foot contol model C-9002 manufactured by CHIENHUNG TAIWAN., LTD must be used. {{ :equipment:craft:pfaff-machine_accessories.png?nolink&400 |}} (Image taken from manual page 5) Selection of presser feet avilable at hackspace: {{ :equipment:craft:pfaff-machine_presser_feet.png?nolink&200 |}}
