This is an old revision of the document!

Some Hackspace equipment requires you to take an induction before using it. This is to ensure the safety of you and the safety of others, and to protect the equipment from damage.

Only Hackspace members can be inducted on Hackspace equipment. Guests, etc, cannot use equipment that requires an induction.

There are two type of inductions at Hackspace. These are: - Online self-inductions, and - In-person inductions.

A self-induction is a induction you can do yourself. It involves two steps: - Read the relevant wiki page to learn how to use the tool safely. - Demonstrate your knowledge by completing the quiz on the Kiosk.

Once you complete the quiz successfully, you will automatically gain access to the tool, and can use it by tapping your keycard on the machine's Control Box.

An in-person induction is a physical demonstration of safe usage by an experienced Hackspace member.

In-person inductions mostly take place on our Induction Weekends, which are typically held a few weeks after an Open Day. Induction Weekends are advertised on the Fourm.

The process for booking inductions at an Induction Weekend has three steps:

  1. Fill in the request form for each tool you would like to be inducted on at the induction events website.
  2. When the confirmation of which members are allocated to which sessions is posted on the forum, confirm your attendance by replying. If there is a problem please contact the @induction-events account on the forum.
  3. Turn up on time for your session. Please be aware that some tools (like the MIG welder) require an online induction to be completed before your in-person induction.

If an event is planned and you are not able to attend the specific days please submit requests via the form and include a note with the days and times you are usually available.

Occasionally, in-person inductions can also be organised at other times by asking on the Forum, but please be aware that inductors are all volunteers who offer their time free of charge, so inductions are typically only offered at their convenience, not yours. There is no guarantee that an induction will be possible in any given timeframe.

The following tools require an online self-induction:

  • Table Saw
  • Mitre Saw
  • Wood Bandsaw
  • Table Router
  • Planer / Thicknesser
  • 3D Printers
  • Sewing Machines
  • Xtool Laser Cutter
  • CNC Wood Router

The following tools require an in-person induction:

  • Wood Lathe
  • Metal Lathe
  • JAS Laser Cutter
  • CNC Mill
  • PCB CNC
  • MIG Welder

All tools that require an induction are protected by Relay Boxes.

Yes! If you want to become an inductor for a machine, get in touch Committee or ask on the Forum. Typically you'll run your first induction under supervision of a current inductor.
