Inductions
Some Hackspace equipment requires you to take an induction before using it. This is to ensure the safety of you and the safety of others, and to protect the equipment from damage.
Only Hackspace members can be inducted on Hackspace equipment. Guests, etc, cannot use equipment that requires an induction.
There are two type of inductions at Hackspace. These are: - Online self-inductions, and - In-person inductions.
Online Self-Inductions
A self-induction is a induction you can do yourself. It involves two steps: - Read the relevant wiki page to learn how to use the tool safely. - Demonstrate your knowledge by completing the quiz on the Kiosk.
Once you complete the quiz successfully, you will automatically gain access to the tool, and can use it by tapping your keycard on the machine's Control Box.
In-Person Inductions
An in-person induction is a physical demonstration of safe usage by an experienced Hackspace.
In-person inductions mostly take play on our Induction Weekends, which typically take place a few weeks after an Open Day. They are advertised on the Fourm.
The induction weekend process has three steps:
- Fill in the request form for each tool you would like to be inducted on at the induction events website.
- When the allocation of members to sessions is posted on the forum confirm your attendance. If there is a problem please contact the
@induction-eventsaccount on the forum. - Turn up on time, some tools (like the MIG welder) require a quiz to be completed as well. These must be completed before the in-person induction.
If an event is planned and you are not able to attend the specific days please submit requests via the form and include a note with the days and times you are usually available.
Occasionally, in-person inductions can also be organised at other times by asking on the Forum, but please be aware that inductors are all volunteers who offer their time free of charge, so inductions are typically only offered at their convenience, not yours. There is no guarantee that an induction will be possible in any given timeframe.
