===== Instructions =====
=== Safety ===
* Be aware of other people around you. Don't bump into them and be respectful of usage space around the equipment.
* Only drill vertically. This is not a mill / CNC machine. Things could go very wrong if the work piece is moved while drilling into it.
* Tie long hair back (prefereably tucking it into clothing). Be aware of beards if appropriate.
* Don't wear loose clothing that might catch on any moving part.
Use the following recommended safety equipment for protection while using this machine:
* Safety goggles for eye protection
* Ear defenders for ear protection
* Dust masks for prevention of inhalation of particulate matter
* Gloves for abrasion resistance (optional)
=== Drill bits ===
* These are located on the shelf labelled "Drill sets and hole related tools".
* If a drill bit is broken during normal usage, replace with a spare drill bit from the "Spare bits" storage box. Do not use the spares if there are still suitable bits available.
* If there are no more spares, make a note of the drill bit size and comment on the mailing list to get more stock. Alternatively, buy a new drill bit and request reimbursement through the normal forms.
* The drill bits can go through metal but take more care in doing so.
* The drill bits are good for general purpose.
* The Forstner bits are good for cutting wood more aggressively.
* The hole saws are good for cutting larger holes but only to a shallow depth (i.e. sheets)
=== Usage ===
- Move the working platform down from the drill head by loosening the handle attaached to the platform.
- Insert the relevant drill bit. Ensure the shank of the drill bit goes all the way into the chuck.
- Tighten chuck with key found on the side of the drill. Tighten well (due to chuck needing to be replaced) so that drill doesn't bite into the material and not drill properly.
- Put chuck key on side of drill into its clip.
- Raise the working platform to the drill bit and align the hole in the platform with the drill bit. This is so that the surface won't be damaged if you do drill through the work piece.
- Without rotating the platform, move the platform down to allow the work piece to fit into the gap. If you need the piece to have clean holes on both sides, use a scrap piece of wood underneath the work piece and allow extra space to fit the scrap piece in as well.
- Secure the working platform by tightening the handle.
- Make sure that the chuck key is not in the chuck and is in the clip.
- Secure the work piece onto the platform with clamps in suitable places. If the piece is too small, use the metal vice clamp to hold the piece so your hands don't have to.
- Ensure that the emergency stop switch is reset by turning the button in the direction of the arrows on it.
- Ensure that the chuck key is not in the chuck.
- Turn on machine with the start button on the side of the machine (near to the chuck key in its clip).
- Slowly use the three handles on the side to lower the drill into the work piece.
- Carefully use the handles to remove the drill bit from the work piece - do **not** just let go of the handles.
- Repeat as often as needed.
=== Tidying up ===
* Wait for a while to ensure that the drill bit is cool. If you can hold onto the bit for a long time (i.e. at least 10 seconds) with your bare hands, that is cold enough.
* Remove drill bit from chuck.
* Put the chuck key back into its clip.
* Put all drill bits back into their respective places.
* Put all safety equipment back.
* Brush the drill and platform to remove excess material. Sweep area around drill press and bin the rubbish.
