The hot works area is a small area and due to the hazards of the other equipment in the space, only one piece of equipment can be operated at one time. Please be considerate of others who may want to use the area.
Go through the before you start checks below before starting and follow the guidance for correct use of the bench grinder.
== Avoiding fire and explosion ==
* DO NOT GRIND ALUMINIUM OR MAGNESIUM - FIRE OR EXPLOSION RISK
* There is likely to be sparks and hot debris from using this grinder. The area should be cleared of any flammable materials, any sawdust swept up etc to minmise the possibility of a fire, which may lead to smoke inhalation, burns or death and may affect all building users. The equipment is in a space physically designated and segregated for hot works away from other acitivities to minmise this risk further.
* Nothing should be stored or abandoned in this area and other tasks should never take place in this area.
* After use, you, or someone nominated by you, must remain in the metal shop for one full hour after completing any hot works to keep a watch for delayed ignition of materials resulting from your work.
== Avoiding exposure to toxic fumes ==
* The grinder is in a designated physically segregated hot works area away from other activies and located beside the roller shutter for maximum ventilation. The roller shutter must be open fully to prevent the build up of fumes in the hot works area and in the metal shop.
* Do not grind galvanised (zinc coated) metal
== Avoiding damage to eyesight ==
* There may be sparks of hot debris, which can cause vision damage, skin damage or burns. There is an adjsutable screen fitted to the grinder which must be used, along with safety glasses or face shield and overalls to protect the user.
== Avoiding damage to hearing ==
* Always wear hearing protection and offer to those who may be nearby in the area.
== Avoiding entanglement ==
* Never wear gloves, a tie, loose clothing, a watch, rings or jewellary when using the becnh grinder.
== Avoiding life changing injuries ==
* Make sure to hold the workpeice firmly against the tool rest to avoid damage to the tool or wheel, and prevent the tool from leaving your hands.
* If there is any damage to the grinding wheel, electrics, or any guards missing, do not use. Put a note on the machine and put a thread on the forum to let people know or contact committee.
* The grinding wheel is at risk from breaking up due to damage. If there is any damage to the grinding wheel, electrics, or any guards missing, do not use. Put a note on the machine and put a thread on the forum to let people know or contact committee.
* The grinding wheel is at risk from breaking up due incorrect speed rating or improper mounting, do not fit your own wheels to the machine.
* The grinding wheel is at risk from breaking up from jamming or build up of foreign materials. Adjust tool rest so that it is close to the wheel and so that your work piece cannot be pulled into the gap between the tool rest and the wheel. You must hold your workpiece firmly to the bed of the machine. The grinder is only for use with ferrous metals. Do not grind aluminium, brass, copper etc.
* The griner must only be used in the designated hotworks space and there should be no one else in the area unless they are doing an induction.
* Emergency stop button on the front
== Avoiding abrasions ==
* Do not touch the grinding wheel, or try to stop it! Wheel guards must be left in place.
=== PPE ===
* safety glasses
* ear defenders
* overalls or something to proetct from sparks and cover up loose clothing is advised
* face shield protection is also advised to protect from sparks and debris
==== Induction ====
Prior to using the grinder, you must attend an in-person induction. Please post on the forum if you want an induction.
Prior to an induction, please have a quick read through the welder manual, and read this wiki page.
The induction consists of a quiz, and an in-person induction. You must pass the quiz first.
Please note, the induction only covers the basics and essential safety elements, as well as any hackspace-specific rules. There won't be anything on grinder techniques / settings, as there's a myriad of information online.
The induction is for the safe use of this machine for the protection of the users and those around. Therefore, no one other than the inducted users should use the equipment, even under supervision of an inducted user.
Once you have has the induction you can use the equipment by pressing your fob or membership card against the RFID/ bleepy box. Please log out after use.

==== Instructions ====
=== Before starting the motor check: ===
* End shields are secured to the main wheel guard by screws, which must be secured at all times.
* Wheel can be revolved freely by hand.
* Check the wheel for damage, chips of cracks. DO NOT USE and change the wheel if there are any, or if you can't change the wheel, remove the wheel and bin it, leave a note on the machine and the forum or let committee know.
* The toolrests are in position, adjusted to within 3mm (1/8") of the periphery face of the wheel, and firmly secured. This is to prevent the workpiece getting jammed between the work rest and the wheel whcih can damage and crack the wheel.
* The protective eyeshields fitted to Bench Grinders are clean and secured in the correct position, or that recommended and approved type of protective goggles, with clean lenses, are worn before operating the machine.
* All adjustments and checks are made with the machine disconnected from the power supply.
* If anything is wrong with the grinder or wheels do not use, put a not on it saying "DO NOT USE", put a thread on the forum or let the committee know ASAP.
=== When starting and using the machine: ===
* Check that the wheel, especially a new replacement wheel, is in sound condition by allowing the machine to run up to maximum speed and remain there for at least 30 seconds before it is put into use. During this check make sure that all personnel are standing clear of the machine.
* Allow the machine to run up to full speed before applying the workpiece to be ground. Never start the grinder with a workpeice against the abrasion wheel.
* Feed the workpiece smoothly onto the grinding wheel and avoid harsh intermittent pressure and bumping onto the wheel.
* Do not apply coolant water to the abrasion wheel, dip the workpiece in water to cool it.
* Always apply light but firm pressure, and allow the wheel to rotate at the maximum possible speed.
* Avoid excessive pressure as this will tend to decrease the wheel speed and the amount of stock removal, cause uneven wear onthe grinding wheel.
* Only apply the workpiece to the face of the abrasive wheel.
* Always use the abrasive wheels that are rated consistent with the speed rating of the bench grinder.
* Do not arrest the wheel by applying pressure to it at the conclusion of the grinding operation. Always allow the machine to run down freely to rest.
* The machine can be operating max. 30 min/hour.
* Always clean the bench grinder and work area when you are finished grinding.

==== Wheel Care ====
Store spare grinding wheels flat on a firm surface with a layer of compressible material between the wheels and the storage surface. Similar material should be placed between wheels when a number are being stored.
As the grinding wheel is used it will wear. it is recommended that the wheel is replaced when the diameter has been reduced approximatcly 25% below the original size (e.g. 300 mm to 225 mm : 200 mm to 150 mm : 150 mm to 112 mm : and 12.5 mm to 94 mm).
Wear on the wheel can cause eccentricity leading to machine vibration and bouncing of the workpiece.
Unless this condition is corrected it can result in further damage to the wheel and possible harm to the rotor bearings. To obtain wheel balance and good efficient grinding action the wheel must be redressed. A suitable wheel dressing tool is avaiable under the part number 1168.
Once replaced, perform a ring/tap test of the wheel to ensure the wheel has no voids in it.
==== General Maintenance ====
Always disconnect the machine from the power supply before making any adjustment to the wheels or any other attachment. Check the supply cable and replace any damaged length. Replacement cables must be of the same current rating as that originally fitted.
The earth wire must always be connected an d maintained. Keep the area around the machine as clean as possible.
Replace damaged tool rests and eyeshields. Failure to do this can cause accidents.
Bearings should be regreased when a major overhaul of the machine is carried out.
==== Clean up ====
Sweep down the area to remove dust to debris from the grinding
